School travel plans

A school travel plan (STP) is a document setting out a package of measures to reduce the number of car trips made to schools by pupils, parents and staff.

School travel plans are not only about transport, they're also about improving health and benefiting the environment and the local community.

All schools in Derbyshire have worked with our sustainable travel team to produce a travel plan.

We're working with schools to encourage them to continue to promote sustainable travel through their travel plan and other related initiatives.

Many schools take part in our annual Travel Smart week, while others are encouraging cycling, scooting, car share and public transport as ways to travel to school.

Other schools have taken creative approaches to encouraging sustainable travel through literacy, music and art, as well as considering ways to try and reduce congestion at the school gate.

Travel to school is an indicator in our local transport plan and also links to our Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy which explains how we intend to encourage children and their parents to make less use of the car for journeys to and from school.
