Developed and trialled with a number of schools across Derbyshire our story tells the tale of a gnu (or wildebeest) as it travels across the grasslands of Africa.
The story character has been adopted by schools as a walking mascot, and the toolkit includes a tally chart so children can attempt to complete the equivalent distance of the wildebeest migration by using different sustainable modes of travel to school.
The story can be used to remind children of importance of keeping safe when crossing the road.
The resource also links with literacy objectives around story telling and writing. The story can be used as a template for children to perform and write their own story.
To support this activity there are mask templates and a suggested scheme of work for teachers which are attached to this page. The mask templates are available in colour or black and white for the children to colour themselves.
