We're promoting services that offer support to young people to act on the guidance.
We can help services that provide sexual and reproductive health support to become more young person friendly.
Why the You're Welcome Award is important
There are about 52,000 young people aged 10 to 24 in Derby, and over 120,000 in Derbyshire, who will now, or in the future, need to use health or care services.
When young people have a positive experience they're more likely to use services appropriately.
Improving young people's access to services will make sure they access support early on, which will improve their health outcomes.
Why this is important for Derby and Derbyshire
The local picture shows young people have good relationships and sexual health outcomes.
However there are some areas we could seek to improve.
Young people tell us:
- only some are aware of how to get support from a public health nurse or school nurse
- a small amount of young people are aware of free condom schemes
- they have low knowledge of activities that could increase sexual risk
Data from The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) shows that locally and nationally:
- there's a decreasing trend in young people having the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination
- there's a decreasing trend in young females taking a chlamydia test
- there has been an increasing trend in the last few years in teenage pregnancy
Building the knowledge, skills, resilience, and aspirations of young people and providing easy access to welcoming services, helps to improve sexual health outcomes for young people.
It helps them to delay sex until they are ready to enjoy healthy, consensual relationships and to use contraception to prevent unplanned pregnancy.
Services that achieve the award can help young people feel confident to access sexual and reproductive health support by reassuring them that they're welcomed and listened to.
How a service can sign up for the award
Email: asch.sexualhealth@derbyshire.gov.uk for support to achieve the You’re Welcome award. You will need to provide a contact for your service who can take a lead on the award.
Read the national guidance: 'You're Welcome': establishing youth-friendly health and care services.
Use the last section of the guidance “Self-assessment and verification” to start
Stage 1: Getting Started
There are 2 options.
Option 1
Use the “support with Stage 1” webpage as your baseline review which includes ideas from local young people on what youth friendly services that provide sexual health support should be like.
Option 2
Use the steps in this stage to do your own independent review of what you have in place now and determine your baseline
Stage 2 – Self-assessment
Use self assessment template to collate evidence that your service meets each of the essential criteria, 2 additional criteria for the 8 standards and 4e specialist services for sexual and reproductive health.
Stage 3 – Review by young people
There are 2 options.
Option 1
Email: asch.sexualhealth@derbyshire.gov.uk and we can organise a group of young people to visit and evaluate your self assessment.
Option 2
Independently identify a youth group or project to evaluate self-assessments or recommend further work.
Following a successful evaluation your service will receive the You’re Welcome Award to display in your service and online.
Your service will also be listed as young person friendly on this website.
Stage 4: service review
Conduct a service review which includes a plan for how young people can be involved in ongoing evaluation and improvements.
