Each workshop is delivered on a carousel system and can be delivered over a full or half day, depending on the size of the school.
RoSPA have recently evaluated the programme and it showed that for those students that attended the day there was a sustained improvement in their attitudes towards driving.
Each workshop is run by a member of the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership.
Topics covered on the driver education programme
Driving under the influence
Focuses on the effects of alcohol and drugs have on the body and brain and looks at how these affect a person's ability to drive. The workshop includes information on roadside testing, the 'morning after' effect and looks at consequences that a drink or drug driving conviction can have.
Distracted driving
Cover topics around different visual, cognitive and manual distractions for drivers. It also looks at how their actions and behaviour as a passenger can have an influence on how the vehicle is driven. The workshop also discusses seat-belt safety and looks at which services attend a road traffic collision. The workshop also discusses seatbelt safety.
Speeding and peer pressure
Focusing on changing attitudes towards safer driving, it explores, through discussion, what factors would cause a vehicle to leave the road and crash. It encourages students to think about who is affected using the 'ripple effect' and looks at the wider impact of a road traffic collision. Students are encouraged to develop a survival action plan as they are capable of speaking up in a car when they don’t feel safe.

The Young Driver Education Programme is free of charge to all schools in Derbyshire.
