Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the canal towpath or cycle the disused Great Central Railway that is part of our easy access loop.
Together, the canal, grassland, woodland and river oxbows are what make this a great place for wildlife and such a special place to visit.
What you might see
If you are lucky you'll see the brilliant blue flash of the kingfisher as it flies past hunting for food. Listen carefully for a tell-tale plop as a water vole drops into the canal and watch them swim across to the burrows you can see on the far bank.
The oxbow pools, created when the River Rother was straightened to build the Great Central Railway, are an unusual feature and provide homes to a variety of wildlife. Swans have often built their nests and raised young here and if you are lucky you might see grass snake swimming across the pools.
Follow the Cuckoo Way, the canal towpath, take a picnic and enjoy getting away from it all.
Call into Tapton Lock Visitor Centre for more walks along the towpath.
