"We've come on to the approach of Half Moon Plantation. So called, simply because of the shape of the plantation itself. A lot of people don't realise though, that this is actually the starting point of the River Rother, which is known famously for running South to North up hill. It is more or less behind you, as you sit on this bench. It disappears under the plantation and under the trail and under the first 2 fields to the west and comes out behind the second hedgerow.
"Following, if you look down you'll see a large sycamore tree, before some houses. It then again disappears under Pilsley Village and comes out just at the other side, where it is still only very, very narrow brook, until it gets down to Padley Wood, where it opens up to at least over 8 foot wide and that is the River Rother proper.
"Also, if you look up slightly to your right from the bench, you'll see another mast. This is actually situated at the point where Pilsley Pit canteen is still standing, it is actually, or was, used formerly as a grain store by the local farmer. I'm right in saying that Pilsley colliery was known as a gas free mine and miners were known to smoke their pipes down Pilsley Pit, which is very, very unusual."
