What this consultation is about
Outseats Byway Open to All Traffic No.52, known also as Hurstclough Lane lies to the south-east of Bamford and links Bamford to Gatehouse Lane, the nearby minor road and the wider countryside. Because of its current condition, it is likely that some users have been dissuaded from using the route. The route has been eroded by water over many years and we wish to carry out repairs to a 350-metre section of the route outlined on the plans attached.
Because the route is narrow and steep we have concluded that the only way to provide a surface that is less likely to erode is to provide a bituminous surface with accompanying drains and channels to control water. Existing historical features in the surface will be retained and not removed from the site.
The plans for the repair are provided on this page and we would welcome your comments.
We intend to carry out improvements to sections of the Hurstclough Lane to enhance safety and encourage other users to enjoy access to the countryside.
Repairs to Hurstclough Lane
This consultation has now closed and work to repair a section of Hurstclough Lane between Hathersage and Outseats are due to be carried out during late in July 2019.
Repairs are needed as the route has suffered extensive damage from water erosion and use.
The section to be repaired is on a steep incline.
Last year we consulted on proposals to resurface this section of the lane using a sealed bitumen surface to improve the condition and bring it up to a suitable standard for users.
We discussed the work with the Local Access Forum and received 43 responses to the consultation and the response was mostly in favour of the proposals.
