Highways design team
Our design teams provide technical advice, support, and supervision of a range of projects on all aspects of highway and structures design, in accordance with the various design standards. Supporting projects on:
- highway maintenance and resurfacing schemes
- new road construction
- junction improvements
- walking and cycling provisions
- bridges, retaining walls, culverts and land reclamation
- geotechnical schemes and road safety improvements
- tendering and awarding of contracts

Structures management team
Our structures management team is responsible for over 1,200 highway bridges, 1,300km of highway retaining walls, over 200 landslip sites, 80 rock faces, plus hundreds of footbridges on public rights of way network across Derbyshire.
The team manages all aspects of highways structures works including, inspection, assessment and programme management, key roles and responsibilities across this team are:
- supporting the implementation of service improvements
- undertaking routine safety inspections on structures
- managing and responding to customer enquiries
- minor planned works preparation
- supporting the service with a safe and timely responses to structure incidents and management of the capital programme

Highway drainage management team
This a newly formed team who is responsible for managing the effective delivery of maintenance activities and capital works for the authorities highway drainage network.
The key roles and responsibilities within the team are:
- manage cyclic, reactive and planned works on the highway drainage network
- carry out necessary site inspections and surveys
- support the delivery of inspection and data capture on the highway drainage asset
- provide responses to enquiries from all customers/service users

Highway maintenance team
This team plans and manages all aspects of the highway network including inspection, assessment and programme management across the county including:
- supporting the implementation of service improvements
- monitoring utility works on our road network
- undertaking routine safety inspections on our road network
- managing and responding to customer enquiries
- minor planned works preparation
- supporting the service with a safe and timely responses to incidents on the road network
All to maintain the highway and thereby provide a safe and reliable highway network for all users.

Public rights of way team
This team is primarily involved in investigating and resolving reported problems on public rights of way including:
- managing and responding to customer enquiries
- investigating and resolving reported problems on public rights of way
- implementing schemes for the repair and maintenance to the network
- assisting with the processing of public path orders
- keeping the definitive map and statement up to date

Highway maintenance programmes team
This team plans and manages the delivery of planned highway maintenance programmes which includes carriageway and footway reconstruction, resurfacing and surface treatments. Key aspects of this include:
- ensuring asset management principles are embedded in everything we do
- commissioning design and construction of maintenance projects and programmes via internal and external partners
- project management to ensure the service we provide is high quality, value for money and delivered in a timely manner
- plan and co-ordinate works on the highway to minimise disruption
- customer focus to ensure stakeholders are kept engaged and informed
- provide specialist technical advice and support with regard highway maintenance techniques and activities
All to maintain the highway and thereby provide a safe and reliable highway network for all users.

Highways strategy
Our highway strategy team supports the highway service by working with highway colleagues to develop and support a whole life approach to the management of highway infrastructure.
We ensure that policy and specifications are developed, evidence is provided to support investment decisions, whilst ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to store, manage and report on highway infrastructure and process.
We also have the benefit of retaining a highways laboratory to monitor and report on craft and quality in the supply chain.
We collaborate with all areas of highways to devise and deliver:
- materials specification through research and innovation
- current and relevant policy, customer levels of service and work process
- our single asset management system and asset data
- the customer relationship management system to enhance the customer journey
- an evidence based forward programme of highway works and long-term budget proposals
- bids for funding opportunities
- innovative thinking and solutions to problems
- supporting survey information
This is an exciting time for the highway strategy team as we deliver both the new asset management system and the customer relationship management system and use these systems to improve our ways of working in line with future highways model.

Highways construction team
Our construction teams have an annual turnover in excess of £20million, are experienced in complex structural and major drainage projects and undertake a wide variety of works for internal and external clients including:
- major construction
- reinstatements and general highways maintenance
- drainage
- street lighting
- traffic signs and road markings
- carriageway resurfacing
- highway training
- gritting the roads in the winter
- emergency response to severe weather

Emergency team planning
The emergency planning team is responsible for writing and updating emergency plans, organising training and exercises for partner agencies and being part of a multi-agency response to incidents and emergencies. The key roles and responsibilities within the team are:
- preparing business continuity plans and multi-agency emergency plans for risks identified in Derbyshire, including large events
- working with the emergency services and other partner agencies to prepare and deliver training and exercises to local authority staff and other partner agencies
- responding to emergencies
