And after meeting members of the YES (Youth Employment Support) team from Erewash Hub, at an Ilkeston Job Centre event, he went along to the hub in July 2023.
Here Corey got careers advice and took courses on maths and digital skills. He was then offered a sector-based work academy programme (SWAP) with a private provider. Corey attended every session and completed qualifications in health and safety, first aid and employability skills. He was interviewed at the end of the SWAP and offered a position with the Ruffins Group event management company.
His first ever paid shift was working as part of the video team at a Take That concert in Norwich.
YES has helped Corey develop confidence and self-esteem, and enabled him to take a big step towards achieving his dream of progressing in the music and events industry and becoming a video or sound engineer.
Erewash Hub was opened following the success of YES at Chesterfield Hub, which exceeded its targets helping young people into jobs, apprenticeships or further training.
YES Derbyshire is a joint initiative we have with the Department for Work and Pensions.
Both hubs offer one-to-one appointments with advisers to explore career and training options. Advisers can also help with health and wellbeing support. Local youngsters can come along in person either for pre-booked appointments or on a drop-in basis. Those from further afield in Derbyshire can go online for help.
