Nikketa Newton
My name is Nikketa Newton and I work within DACES (Derbyshire Adult Community Education Services). I am a programme development manager for employability.
I previously worked within the apprenticeship team which is where I started to think about how an apprenticeship could support my own personal development. An opportunity came up for me to progress into a new role and I felt this was the perfect time to apply.
I started the Chartered Manager Level 6 Degree apprenticeship in 2021. After looking into the content, I knew this would help me develop new skills, knowledge, and behaviours within my new management role.
As part of my apprenticeship, I attend university 3 to 4 days a term, I meet with my personal tutor over teams once a term, and I work alongside my line manager and mentor to source suitable opportunities and projects that will support my apprenticeship within the workplace. The modules covered within the apprenticeship can be adapted to suit most roles and so far I have covered things such as mentoring and coaching, business finance and innovative operations.
I am glad I took this opportunity when I did and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to study towards a degree within work.
I would recommend apprenticeships to all, there is something out there for every role and it’s a great way to upskill and learn on the job.
I intend to use my apprenticeship to support my current role but also know that it will support me if and when I feel ready to further develop into other roles in the future.
