If you have any specific questions about the repairs to the retaining wall, email: highway.structures@derbyshire.gov.uk.
About the repairs
The B6001 Grindleford to Hathersage road will be closed to all traffic, pedestrians and cyclists from Monday, 3 March 2025 for a major 4 week repair programme, subject to weather conditions.
The repairs are part of an ongoing, 3 year project, which started last spring, to rebuild 100 metres of the 100 year old retaining wall to prevent the road collapsing down the steep bank.
The repairs have been staggered over 3 years to minimise inconvenience for local communities. The existing retaining wall was built without any secure foundations, using a dry stone wall method of construction, which has limited strength in the face of today’s much heavier traffic volumes.
Highway inspections have revealed large cracks to the road surface, caused by the gradual sinking and near collapse of the retaining wall. The existing stone will be reused to build a new, 1 metre high wall, using mortar with extensive concrete foundations up to half a metre deep.
The road will be resurfaced where the repairs are being carried out, and additional work to remove any dead or diseased trees will also be completed.

Diversion route
A signed diversion route will be in place using the B6001, B6521 and A6187.
Public safety forces complete closure of the road
Due to the narrow width of the B6001 and the space needed to complete the repairs where the wall has collapsed, there will unfortunately be no pedestrian access along this part of the road. This is to maintain public safety and to protect our workforce.
School buses
We have been working with bus companies to minimise disruption for children and their families.
School buses, including services 100 and 257 to the Lady Manners secondary school in Bakewell, will be affected by the temporary closure of the B6001.
Both school bus services will follow the signed diversion route using the A6187 and B6521. The timetable for the service 100 will be brought forward by several minutes and the details have been shared with the school, pupils and parents.
The timetable for service 257, operated by Hulley’s of Baslow, will remain unchanged as the operator has informed us that there is sufficient time to accommodate the diversion route.
Public transport services
The 257 bus service will be affected by the temporary closure of the B6001. The service, provided by Hulley’s of Baslow, operates from Bakewell via Baslow - Eyam - Grindleford - Hathersage - Bamford - Ladybower and onto Sheffield.
We have recommended to the company that they follow the official diversion route, but, as this is a commercial service, the company can choose to use a route of their choice.
To find out more about changes to public transport services we recommend you check the companies social media accounts on X (formally Twitter) and Facebook.
If you have any questions about school bus services or public bus services, please email: etc.schooltransport@derbyshire.gov.uk
Access for the emergency services
We work closely with the emergency services and they are aware of the road closure and the diversion route.
Home visits for people requiring care
We understand that the repair works will affect journey times and we have contacted a number of private and public sector organisations to inform them of the disruptions.
Refuse collections
The local district council has been informed and will amend their refuse and recycling collection routes.
