Road safety - children and schools

We want to promote safe and sustainable travel for children.

We work with schools to provide road safety educational resources that compliment the national curriculum.

Our Travel Smart initiative supports sustainable travel to school during the national walk to school week campaigns.

Our school crossing patrols provide additional support for the safety of children and their parents and carers walking to and from school. School crossing patrols are currently provided at around 130 sites throughout the county, making a vital contribution to ensuring that Derbyshire children travel safely to and from school.

Read our school transport plans and find out about school buses.

Resources

Improving road safety on our roads is one of our top priorities and educational settings as well as parents and guardians play an important role in helping children learn vital skills they need to help them stay safe on the roads.

Your road safety officer can help your school by:

  • offering free curriculum linked classroom resources covering early years and Key Stages 1 to 4 for whole class, small group or individual work - packs can be 'dipped' in and out of or used to create a longer term project and road safety themes covered include:
    • people who help us
    • pedestrian safety
    • in car safety
    • Be Bright Be Seen
    • independent travel
    • driving under the influence (drink and drugs)
  • offering advice on planning and implementing road safety into class time
  • help develop a set programme of road safety activities

If you want to ask about loaning the resources please email roadsafety@derbyshire.gov.uk or tel: 01629 538060.

We look forward to working with you to develop your pupils road safety skills and helping them become better road users.
