Smoking and oral health

As well as the risks to our general health, smoking has a big impact on our oral health too.

Smoking increases our risk of gum disease, which leads to wobbly teeth and tooth loss.

Tobacco use can increase wound healing time, and also stains our teeth and tongue which is not a great look!

Smoking is also one of the main causes of oral cancer, especially when combined with drinking alcohol.

All forms of tobacco are harmful, and this includes paan, betel quid, bidi and shisha.

E-cigarettes and vapes are to help smokers to quit. They may not be as dangerous as normal smoking, but they still are harmful to us.

There is not enough research on the long-term effects of e-cigarettes.

The best thing you can do is to not start vaping or smoking in the first place.

If you need support to quit smoking, speak with your school nurse or contact Live Life Better Derbyshire who can support you for free.
