Bad breath

Most of us have had bad breath - also called halitosis - at some point. It is very common, and you can usually treat it yourself.

But it can impact on how you feel, and might make you not want to hang out with your mates or take part in things you enjoy.

The best thing to do is make sure you keep your teeth, tongue, and mouth clean.

To help with this try:

  • regular dental check-ups
  • gentle tongue cleaning with a tongue scraper
  • sugar free mints or chewing gum after strong foods and drinks
  • antibacterial, alcohol free mouthwash or toothpaste

Some reasons we get bad breath can include:

  • strong smelling food and drinks
  • a problem with your teeth or gums
  • crash dieting
  • certain medical conditions or medications
  • smoking

If you are worried about bad breath that does not seem to be getting better, then speak to your dentist or GP.
