Suicide awareness and managing mental health conversations training
Suicide awareness and managing mental health conversations training is a half-day course designed to increase the knowledge of staff and volunteers with regard to mental health conversations and suicide prevention.
This course will build participants general awareness and understanding of the topic of suicide and equip participants with skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with individuals who exhibit emotional distress.
Learning takes place across the following topic areas:
- emotional distress
- suicide and suicide prevention
- risk factors
- warning signs
- conversations
- signposting
This course is suitable for staff and volunteers whose role may include either having conversations with individuals in emotional distress or who would benefit from an awareness and understanding of suicide and suicide prevention.
It is currently available as both a virtual (online interactive) and face-to-face course. Registration and booking of places for this course is through Eventbrite.

Suicide e-learning training
Zero Suicide Alliance's 'suicide let's talk' training is a free 20 minute suicide awareness training session, where you will gain skills and confidence to help someone who may be considering suicide. You will get a certificate when you have completed the training.
Who it is for
The training is recommended for anyone aged 16 and over. Anyone can learn how to have a potentially life-saving conversation.
What you'll learn

- how to have a conversation with someone you're worried about
- where to signpost to for further support
- suicide is preventable
Take part in a free 20 minute e-learning suicide awareness training provided by Zero Suicide Alliance.
British Sign Language (BSL)
The Zero Suicide Alliance training course is available in British Sign Language (BSL). To access their BSL video, scan the QR codes (sign codes) that can be seen throughout the training. Alternatively, these can be clicked on and the videos will open in a new tab and play.
Suicide bereavement training
Funded by Joined Up Care Derbyshire, this half-day virtual (online interactive) training is for staff and volunteers from statutory, community and voluntary sector organisations, working in Derbyshire County or Derby City. Registration and booking of places is through Eventbrite.
The course is designed to enable participants to effectively explore and understand the following:
- the magnitude of suicide bereavement
- suicide loss as a unique form of complex bereavement
- 'complicated grief', trauma, and other individual responses to suicide
- the wider impact of bereavement on those exposed to or affected by suicide
- the stigma and shame associated with suicide and bereavement
- bereavement by suicide as a unique risk factor for suicide
