Family history - getting started

Before you start, decide whether to start with your mother or father's family. Doing both at once is not impossible but can become very confusing.

First talk to your relatives and collect as much information as you can. Gather it all together and photocopy or write it down.

When you're ready to start your research, ask if there's anything at your local library to help you. Several of the larger ones have some family history research materials for their local area.

Soon you'll need to visit one or more of the bigger local studies libraries. These are at Chesterfield Library and Matlock, in the Derbyshire Record Office.

It's essential to book an appointment before you visit so that there will be a microfilm machine for you to use and the staff will have time to help you.
