Other agencies and flooding emergencies

There are other agencies who have responsibilities in responding to a flooding emergency.


Highway Agency agents and consultants

The Highway Agency and its agents or consultants assist with flood alleviation such as issuing sandbags, clearance of blocked gutters and drains, dealing with flooded roads and traffic diversions. Telephone: 0300 123 5000.

Water utilities

Water utility suppliers have the following responsibilities: 

  • securing water supply and sewerage services and equipment to ensure continuity of service
  • repairing services disrupted by flood events
  • providing alternative means of supply during service disruption if life and health risks are identified
  • advising local authorities and the communications media when disrupted services will be reinstated
  • liaising with, or if necessary attending, the emergency control centre

Other utility suppliers have the following responsibilities:

  • securing their services and equipment to ensure continuity of supply
  • repairing services disrupted by flood events
  • providing alternative means of supply during service disruption if life and health risks are identified
  • advising local authorities and the communications media when disrupted services will be reinstated
