School governors

We need effective governing boards to ensure the success of our schools. We can help you become a school governor and provide support and guidance to governing boards.

Governing boards make the key strategic decisions for our schools and ensure that all statutory duties are met. The success of our boards is dependent on the quality of the governors and how effectively they work.

Governing boards are made up of several categories of school governors who are elected or appointed in different ways. These include staff governors, parent governors, co-opted governors and local authority governors. We have a legal duty to nominate local authority governors for our schools in Derbyshire.

We also provide support and guidance to governing boards including training, newsletters, briefings, model policies and protocols, guidance and advice, a model agenda and briefing service and a helpline.

If you'd like more information about the role of a school governor please see the National Governors Association and the Governors for Schools.
