Attendance, missing and home education service

Information about attendance, children missing from education, exclusion and access, elective home education for children, parents and carers, and schools.

School attendance

We carry out statutory action regarding unsatisfactory school attendance matters at the request of schools and academies.

This includes issuing penalty notices and undertaking prosecutions in relation to unsatisfactory school attendance, timekeeping and unauthorised leave of absence during term-time.

Children missing from education

We have a statutory duty to monitor and track children missing from education and work with families to ensure children have access to a suitable education as quickly as possible.

Exclusion and access

We offer advice and guidance on the school exclusion process, and have a duty to monitor and report on suspension and permanent exclusion, off-site direction and managed moves and part-time timetables.

Elective home education

When a child is removed from school to be electively home educated, parents are responsible for ensuring that children are properly educated.

However, we have an obligation to ensure that a child is safe and being suitably educated.

We also offer support and guidance to school and parents in relation to this area.

Children in employment and entertainment

We carry out statutory functions in the areas of children in part-time employment and the licensing of children in entertainment, modelling and paid sporting activities.
