We're set to freeze school meal prices for next academic year

Published: 1 July 2019

We're set to freeze the price of school meals until September 2020.

The proposal will be considered at a meeting of our Cabinet Member for Young People meeting on Monday 8 July 2019.

It means there will be no requested increase in the recommended selling price of a school meal to children and adults in secondary, primary, special and nursery schools from 3 September 2019 to 1 September 2020.

Our school catering service serves around 57,000 meals across the county every day in nursery, primary, special and secondary schools.

Take-up of school meals in Derbyshire has increased over the past 12 months with more than two-thirds of nursery, primary and over half of secondary school pupils receiving meals each day.

Our Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said:

“We place great emphasis on nutrition, healthy choices and the variety of meals we provide for pupils across Derbyshire and have worked hard to keep prices as low as we can so as many children as possible benefit.

“Despite rising costs in food and energy prices and an investment in school kitchen technology to improve efficiency, we’re very pleased to be able to propose holding the recommended school meal prices at last year’s level for the next academic year to September 2020.

“We’ve seen an increase in the number of families opting for our award-winning school meals for their children which is excellent news and we continue to promote the benefits to increase take-up yet further.”

Our school catering service has recently achieved the prestigious Food for Life Catering Mark silver and bronze awards which recognise food providers who take steps to raise standards and improve the food they serve.

The awards are part of a national scheme to encourage children to think about where their food comes from, how it’s grown and how to prepare healthy, balanced meals.
