Schools set to benefit from £570,000 match-funding scheme

Published: 9 March 2020

More than 25 schools across the county are set to benefit from a £570,000 funding boost to help give children the best start in life.

Our Cabinet is to consider proposals to provide 25 schools with match-funding for improvement and refurbishment work at a meeting next week (Monday 16 March 2020).

News of the school building boost comes a month after Full Council agreed recommendations about how it would spend its £560.2 million budget for 2020 to 2021 with one of the lowest council tax rises in the country.

We've approved 416 projects since we launched our popular Joint Match Funding Initiative for schools in 2012 – and the 25 new bids to be considered by Cabinet next week would, if approved, take a share of £570,135.

The cash would fund projects including:

  • roof repairs
  • toilet and kitchen refurbishment
  • window and door replacement
  • replacement flooring
  • playground resurfacing
  • replacement CCTV systems

The funding arrangement considers projects valued from £10,000 with us matching 50% of each school’s contribution up to a maximum of £15,000.

Our Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said:

“Our match-funding programme demonstrates how financial support can provide value-for money lasting benefits to pupils, staff, visitors and wider school communities.

“We want every Derbyshire child to have the opportunity to achieve their full potential and get the best start in life – and this is supported by learning in the best possible environment.

“Sharing the cost in match-funding initiatives like this ensures that schools can carry out improvements and repairs while preventing the need for more costly repairs in the future and if approved, this funding will help us to help schools do just that.”
