More pedal power at Middleton Top

Published: 5 July 2017

Middleton Top Visitor Centre will soon have even more to offer visitors now we have approved plans to hire out electric bikes and run a repair service for privately owned pedal bikes.

E bike

Three adult size electric assist bikes – or E bikes – will be available to hire which means the High Peak Trail can now be enjoyed by people who would otherwise find it too challenging.

E bikes are fitted with an electric motor to give cyclists a boost while pedalling allowing them to tackle bigger hills such as the Hopton incline – a section of the High Peak Trail which has a 1 in 14 gradient – and cover an average of 45 miles on a fully charged battery.

The cycle repair and maintenance service will be offered to visitors who are using their own bikes to explore the trails but may get punctures or problems with their gears or brakes.

Our Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure Councillor Simon Spencer, said:

“Cycling is a great form of exercise and we want as many people as possible to get out and enjoy our countryside sites. Hiring out electric bikes is an important step towards this.

“We’re always looking for ways to generate more income to help with the cost of running our countryside sites and with the rise in popularity of E bikes they, together with the bike repair service, will be a welcome extra source of funding."

Hire charges for the E bike will be £27 for a full day or £23 for a half day. Cyclists will also need to give a £50 deposit and show some photo identification – such as a driver’s licence. A safety induction will be given before each hire and the motor assist on the bike stops at 15.5mph.

There will be a range of charges for the cycle repair and maintenance service. These will range from £6 for a puncture repair using a patch to £21 for a tyre replacement and will include any materials needed. The service will be subject to staff availability and people wanting bike services or repairs are encouraged to pre-book if possible tel: 01629 533294.

Two E bikes will be available from the end of July with another to follow later in the summer and the repair service has now started.
