Have your say on plans to relocate 2 county libraries

Published: 30 June 2023

Residents using 2 county libraries will be able to give their views on plans to relocate them following the launch of consultations into the proposals.

We are considering relocating 2 of our libraries, in Clay Cross and Staveley, to what it considers to be more beneficial and accessible buildings and locations.

It is hoped that if the moves go ahead, both libraries would see an increase in visitor numbers and attract new library members, as well as helping to cut our carbon footprint.

Separate 12-week consultations have now been launched (Friday 30 June 2023), giving users of each of the libraries, local residents and any interested parties the chance to have their say.

The relocation plans are linked to Town Deals in both areas, overseen by Chesterfield Borough Council (Staveley) and North East Derbyshire District Council (Clay Cross), and we are working closely with Town Deals teams and other partners to discuss the proposals.

Clay Cross Library is currently in Kenning Park, Holmgate Road, and although it has good pedestrian access, it is situated away from the town centre. We own the current library building but lease the land it’s built on from Clay Cross Parish Council.

The Town Deal presents an opportunity to relocate the library into the current adult education centre which is to be part developed and part refurbished to create a new ‘Skills Hub’ at the heart of the town centre.

Staveley Library is currently on Hall Lane and, although it has good access and parking, it is also situated away from the town centre.

There is potential to relocate Staveley Library into the proposed building on the Market Place. This building is a key element of the town centre rejuvenation based on the Master Plan which is being funded through the Staveley Town Deal.

Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change Councillor Barry Lewis said:

“These are extremely positive proposals which would result in new library facilities in new or refurbished buildings, enhancing our library service and all it has to offer to current visitors as well as new ones who may be attracted to visit due to the busy town centre locations.

“These consultations give everyone who uses either of these libraries or has an interest in them the chance to give their views and raise any potential issues around the proposed relocations.”
