Derbyshire's Leader joins national campaign for fair share of government funding

Published: 14 January 2020

Motorists in Derbyshire are the ‘poor relation’ to urban areas according to a new analysis revealed this week by the County Council Network (CCN).

The analysis shows that 35 shire counties, including Derbyshire, were able to spend an average of just over £21,000 per mile on road repairs, pothole repairs, new junctions and networks during 2019/20. In contract the 31 councils in London were able to spend just over £62,000. The 36 urban metropolitan councils spend almost £42,000 per mile, with England’s core cities spending just over £57,000 per mile.

Our Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said:

“For many years shire counties have not had the funding that other parts of the country have, and together with the County Council Network I am calling for funding to be levelled up so that places like Derbyshire are not disadvantaged.

“I’d like to see the government’s new £2billion pothole fund shared out in a more equal way so that we are able to invest properly in Derbyshire’s roads.

“We know that local roads being kept in a good condition is a priority for our residents and I’m hopeful that real change to government funding is on the way.”

The CCN analysis uses local government 2019/20 revenue and capital expenditure data on roads maintenance and divides the amount by the miles of local roads maintained by council types and regions. The following tables breakdown the full results of the analysis.
