Clean-up operation underway following flash flooding in Matlock town centre

Published: 10 July 2023

Working with partners, a clean-up operation is underway in Matlock town centre, following unexpectedly heavy showers and thunderstorms on Saturday 8 July 2023.

From around 9pm on Saturday night, intense rainfall caused flash flooding from the Crown Square roundabout on the A615 to the Co-op food store.

The heavy rainfall caused further surface water flooding from the junction of the A615 with Dimple Road to the M&S food hall.

Debris dislodged during the thunderstorm included leaves, tree branches, gravel and parts of the surface of local roads damaged by the heavy rainfall.

In response, we spent yesterday, Sunday 9 July 2023, jetting the drains along the A615 from the Matlock Town football ground to the McDonald's roundabout, to remove debris washed away during Saturday night’s storm.

Road repairs are also underway today, Monday 10 July 2023, to patch roads damaged during the storm.

Manhole covers lifted during the storm due to the pressure of the rainwater have also been replaced or reinstated.

Derbyshire residents and businesses affected by the weekend’s surface water flooding can register for support from our flood grant scheme by emailing flood.team@derbyshire.gov.uk

Our Cabinet Member for Highways Assets and Transport, Councillor Charlotte Cupit,  said:

“Following the very warm weather last week, we experienced unexpectedly intense rainfall across Derbyshire as the weather turned cooler on Saturday night.

“Due to the steep hills surrounding Matlock town centre, and the extreme volumes of rainwater, the thunderstorm caused some surface water flooding along the A615.

“Today, Council Leader Barry Lewis, myself and other representatives have been out in Matlock town centre to see at first hand the issues caused by the unexpected flooding and to talk to property owners and local businesses.

“We have also been busy clearing the debris washed in to the road drains during the storm in readiness for any further thunderstorms.

“Our teams are out and about patching sections of road damaged during the storm and replacing manhole covers lifted by the intense rainfall.

“Recognising the challenges caused by flooding, we are encouraging Derbyshire residents and businesses to register for our flood grant scheme by sharing their details with us by emailing flood.team@derbyshire.gov.uk

“I’d like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience and support following the exceptional weather conditions.

“We’ll continue to work with a number of partners, including Severn Trent Water and the Environment Agency, to identify a long term solution to tackle flash flooding issues in Matlock town centre.”

To help build a clear picture of any properties across Derbyshire affected by Saturday night’s storm, local residents and business can contact our flood team, email flood.team@derbyshire.gov.uk.
