A Derbyshire County Council library has been awarded £5,000 to support neurodiverse visitors

Published: 10 March 2025

Heanor Library has received £5,000 from Arts Council England and Libraries Connected to develop a neurodiverse-friendly library, ensuring an inclusive and welcoming environment for neurodiverse visitors.

Our library, in Ilkeston Road, will use the cash to support the introduction of measures to improve accessibility and provide a supportive space for neurodivergent children, adults and families.

Planned initiatives include staff training to better understand and meet the needs of autistic visitors, sensory-friendly resources, improved visual aids such as clear library signage and a map of the library.

It will also be offering inclusive events that are tailored to the needs of neurodivergent visitors such as craft events and story times.

The project will involve collaboration with local schools and members of the local community in Heanor to ensure library staff truly understand and meet the needs of neurodiverse visitors.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change, said:

“Our libraries are there for everyone to use and enjoy.

“This funding, secured through the Libraries Connected Microgrants programme, will allow us to make Heanor Library more accessible for neurodivergent visitors.

“By creating an environment that welcomes and supports everyone, we hope to ensure that all members of our community feel valued and comfortable when using the library.”
