What this consultation is about
Chapel-en-le-Frith Byway Open to All Traffic No.144, known also as Chapel Gate, is a well-used route that provides access to views of the iconic landscape of Derbyshire. The route is in poor condition and we wish to carry out repairs to parts of the first kilometre of the route from its junction with Sheffield Road and in a north-easterly direction.
Our aim is to provide a route that is reasonably accessible to a variety of users. We have tried to retain sections that lend character to the route and do not limit access or present a hazard to potential users. We have taken the decision to remove sections of the route that we believe limit opportunities for less able users to negotiate the route and enjoy access to the higher sections of moorland. These sections will be reconstructed to provide a route that is easier to negotiate by all users. Our design incorporates improved drainage to reduce water erosion which has been the main cause of its decline over the years.

We will begin to draw up plans for the repair and restoration the continuation of this route, known as Edale Byway Open to All Traffic No.16, to its termination near Barber Booth later this year.
To summarise we intend to carry out improvements to sections of the first kilometre of Chapel Gate to enhance safety and encourage other users to enjoy access to the countryside.
