Registering a building for worship or the solemnization of marriage

Under the provision of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855, a congregation may apply for a building to be a certified building of worship. This does not include a church or chapel of the Church of England, unless it shares a church building with another religious denomination.

Registering a building as a place of worship

The person who acts as 'minister', 'proprietor' or 'trustee' at the place of worship should contact the superintendent registrar in the district in which the venue is situated for advice and an application form.

Applications are forwarded by the superintendent registrar to the General Register Office for authorisation. 

If a congregation stops using the building, the General Register Office must be informed.

Registering a place of religious worship for solemnization of marriage

You can apply for a place of worship to become a venue where marriages or civil partnership ceremonies can take place.

You should contact the superintendent registrar for advice and an application form.

Applications are forwarded by the superintendent registrar to the General Register Office for authorisation.
