Chesterfield 50+ Inspired Group

We invite well-qualified speakers to our meetings to address the concerns and interests of our forum members.

50+ inspired group

We encourage our own members to address the meetings about matters they feel to be important and encourage discussion.

Our management committee provides regular reports about information they have acquired and other meetings they have attended.

Achievements

Chesterfield 50+ Forum has developed a toenail cutting scheme for anyone in the community who has difficulty in cutting their own nails for reasons of age or health. The service is available on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1pm and 2pm at Physiotherapy Clinic, 98 Saltergate (old NUM building) and costs £7.50 per session. No appointment necessary.

We have engaged in a number of inter-generational activities. This has involved the Pomegranate Theatre's young people. The sewing and knitting group has helped them in various ways, and they have helped us with IT and mobile phone use.

We have entered into dialogue with the Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport in an effort to raise concerns about public transport and attempting to get the bus companies to improve services for residents rather than concentrating on profit margins.

Regular planning updates are held so that we can update members on proposed plans for the town and surrounding areas.

What we're doing

The forum was started in 2002. We now have approximately 230 members, and have a regular attendance of 50 to 60 at our meetings, which are held by kind permission of Chesterfield Borough Council on the second Thursday of alternate months, from 10.15am until 12.15pm in the Town Hall Council Chambers. The management committee meet at the Town Hall on the second alternate month to open meetings and discuss and agree plans for the forum.

Forum members often attend meetings of other relevant organisations and report back any information that is relevant to our members. Among meetings regularly attended are Derbyshire Carers, Mental Health Groups, Council Tax Planning meetings, meetings of local forums, Chesterfield Age Concern, Diversity and Equality Panel and the NDVA (North Derbyshire Voluntary Action).
