Household waste recycling centres

Find out the locations, opening times and general information about all our household waste recycling centres.

Register to use the recycling centres

We strongly recommend that you read the following guidelines before starting the registration process.

Register your vehicle to use the recycling centres

We’re introducing a ‘residents-only’ registration system to make things fairer and more cost-effective for people living in Derbyshire by helping to reduce the amount of waste being brought to our recycling centres from outside of the county.

Our neighbouring counties have introduced a number of similar schemes or changes and with this change each area will be dealing with and paying for its own waste and recycling. This could save up to £800,000 in council tax-payers’ money.

How to register

High volumes of people registering online means our website is running slower than usual. We're sorry for any problems this may cause. Please be assured that we won’t be turning away unregistered vehicles immediately. Residents will be reminded of the need to sign-up at their next visit, but to avoid disappointment in future we are encouraging people to register at their earliest convenience.

Please read the following information before you register:

Step 1

  • before you start the registration process, you should either log in to your regular account you use to access our online services, or create an account if you don’t already have one. If you’re creating a new account, you will be asked to input your contact details. Please note that the information you must provide is marked with a * - any other information is optional
  • after you’ve created your account, check to make sure it’s live by logging in again. Completing the process for creating an account, does not mean you have registered your vehicle

Step 2

  • when your account is live, log in and scroll to H in the A-Z menu of services. Select ‘Household Waste and Recycling Centres – Register your vehicle for access’
  • you should now be able to register your vehicles (up to two cars per person). Vans require a temporary permit and you can only register for a temporary permit when you know when you wish to visit the recycling centre - camper vans are covered by the general registration and do not require a temporary permit
  • you will receive an email confirmation when your registration is complete. If you haven’t received the email confirmation, please check your Junk folder
  • to check whether your registration is complete, log in to your account and select View Active Permits, then Current Vehicles and Permits - this will display the number plates of the vehicles you have registered
  • this is a digital registration - you will not receive a physical permit

If you registered before 9 November 2024

If you registered before 9 November, you will need to register again - apologies for any inconvenience.

A high volume of visitors are accessing the registration system and it's running slower than usual. We're sorry for any problems this may cause.

Trade waste

A trial scheme to accept trade waste is being introduced at Ashbourne and Stonegravels. Access is restricted to between 8.30am and 9.30am and between 5pm and 6pm.

Find costings and how to register for trade waste.

Opening times

Opening times are 9.30am to 5pm (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day) at all sites except Waterswallows which is open between 8.30am and 6pm.

Try not to turn up early to queue, and avoid busy periods if possible, such as weekends from 10am to 4pm.

During the day some of our recycling centres may have to temporarily close to compact the skips with machinery or other unavoidable operational reasons. We'll keep closures to a minimum.

Please don't leave any waste outside our recycling centres. This is classed as fly-tipping, which is a criminal offence. Find out what you can and can't bring to our sites.

Please:

  • sort your waste into different types before you arrive
  • avoid busy periods if possible such as weekends and from 10am to 4pm

Keep safe on site

Please:

  • drive slowly and carefully adhering to the site signage at all times
  • turn off the engine and apply the handbrake
  • be careful when walking between vehicles
  • look out for moving vehicles
  • keep children (under 16) and pets in the vehicle
  • wear gloves to avoid injuries from carrying waste
  • wear sensible shoes to prevent injury
  • use walkways and crossing points provided and take care around kerbs, steps and ramps
  • smoking and vaping on site is prohibited
  • no taking photographs or video onsite without prior permission
  • ensure waste is not left at the rear of vehicles and is deposited immediately to reduce trip hazards
  • ensure waste is deposited into the correct receptacle
  • don't throw waste into containers, place in gently
  • waste is not permitted to be carried into site on foot, unless a prior appointment to do so has been made

Please treat staff with respect. Aggressive and threatening behaviour is not acceptable and you may be asked to leave. CCTV and bodycams are in operation at all our sites.

All our waste recycling sites have a mobile defibrillator. In an emergency please ask a recycling advisor for assistance.

Free paint

All our recycling centres (except Waterswallows) give away free paint (subject to availability). If you're interested in taking some paint please speak to a recycling advisor on site.

Sorting waste

Please sort your waste before coming to the household waste recycling centres. This will make it quicker for you to dispose of your items.

Watch our video about pre-sorting your items to help cut waste and prevent things going to landfill.

Tip-runs

Please be aware that if you pay a third party contractor to remove waste from your home it immediately becomes their commercial waste and it will not be accepted at our recycling centres. It should be disposed of by a private sector waste management company.

You have a duty of care to ensure your waste is disposed lawfully so please make sure you ask to see their waste carriers licence.

To find a registered waste carrier visit the Environment Agency.

Vans and trailers

Drivers can visit with vans weighing up to 3.5 tonnes when loaded and trailers with a load area up to 2 metres long (excluding the tow bar) to drop off household waste from their own property.

No horse boxes are allowed to transport waste.

It's also a good idea to sort your recycling before you travel to save time when you arrive.

We also have a map showing recycling centres.

Derby City Council also operates a site on Raynesway Park Drive just off the A5111 Raynesway. Residents are allowed to visit up to 12 times a year and visits must be pre-booked.

Your waste

We want to reuse and recycle as much as possible so please sort your waste before visiting. Please place your recycling in the correct container to reduce items sent for disposal. Ask a recycling advisor if you are not sure where to place items.

Recycling advisors may open bin bags to look for things that can be recycled or reused. If you have any concerns about your waste being treated in this way, please speak to one of the recycling advisors who will carefully deal with any items of a personal nature.

Reusing items is the best way environmentally for dealing with waste before recycling and composting. You could donate them to charity shops or sell them online or at your local market

There are some types of waste that we can't accept in any circumstances. Trade and commercial waste is not accepted, for instance. Find out what you can and can't bring to our sites.

Please make sure that all personal data is removed from electrical items such as PCs, laptops, smart TVs, mobile phones, tablets and sat navs.

Please remove all batteries from electrical items before recycling and place them in the battery bins provided as batteries in electricals have caused fires on site in Derbyshire.

What else can you do

Please use your kerbside collection run by your local district or borough council as you normally would.

See our tips to help you minimise your waste.

If your items still have some life left in them, you could try selling them online or compost garden waste at home.

Soil improver

You can buy 50 litre bags of garden soil improver at all our recycling centres for £3.50 per bag. Payment is by card only.

There are issues with stocks of soil improver at all our recycling centres. Please don't make a special trip to buy soil improver as we can't guarantee it'll be in stock.
