Carers share their lives with people who, through disability or ill health, need help to remain in their community.
The support they offer can be long-term, a short break or daytime support.
Be a Shared Lives carer
Carers come from all walks of life, they can be single, have a family, be working, unemployed, or retired.
Register your interest in being a Shared Lives carer
We're looking for people from all backgrounds regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.
You need to be patient with a stable home life, flexible and willing to learn.
Training is provided and support is on hand. Carers are paid depending on the type of support they offer.
Shared Lives is registered with the Care Quality Commission and carers are assessed and approved.
How Shared Lives can help you
Shared Lives can support you if you are an older person, have a physical or learning disability or mental health problems.
You get your own room and the chance to live an ordinary life in an ordinary family home.
With support from a Shared Lives carer, you could meet friends, volunteer, find paid work or join a local group or activity.
It can also support you if you are a young vulnerable adult who is leaving children's support services.
Shared Lives can:
- provide support and accommodation to enable people to move from their family carers to live with a shared lives carer
- offer an alternative to day care, residential or nursing care
- provide family carers with a regular break from caring
- help people to maintain and develop their independence and life skills
- provide support to a family and offer reassurance that the person they care for is looked after
Charges
There's a charge for staying with a Shared Lives carer in their home. The cost will depend on the length of time you stay and your individual situation. Your allocated worker will assess this.
