Scooter Smart
Scooter Smart is a project aimed at providing children with the confidence and skills to use a scooter as a mode of travel, particularly as a way of encouraging scooting as an alternative to the car and as a healthier way to travel to school.
Scooter Smart is delivered as a part of a school's Modeshift STARS travel plan. Children take part in a Scooter Smart training day to introduce and develop skills to encourage them to scoot to school.
The training is aimed at reminding children about:
- pavement courtesy - look out for, slow down and give way to pedestrians, as well as watching out for cars entering and exiting driveways
- road safety - stop, look and listen and push the scooter across the road
- scooter accessories - a helmet can help to protect your head, especially if you are riding at the skate park too - bells, lights and high visibility clothing can help you to be seen and heard
- scooter maintenance - make sure the scooter is safe to ride by checking the steering and brakes
