Our funding will help new trust promote physical activity in Derbyshire

2 February 2018

We're helping to fund a new trust that aims to get more people involved in sport and activities.

The newly formed Active Partners Trust (APT) incorporates two county sports organisations - Active Derbyshire and Active Notts.

Over the next 27 months, we will be providing £304,000 of funding to the trust to help promote and encourage physical activity in Derbyshire.

APT will manage centralised functions such as marketing and funding while Active Derbyshire and Active Notts will deliver support and resources in each county.

They aim to increase the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity and are working with partners including Sport England, local authorities and the University of Derby.

Our Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart said:

"Getting active is one of the best things you can do to help improve your health but it can sometimes feel overwhelming knowing where to start.

"However there are some big changes happening to the way that sport and physical activity is being promoted in Derbyshire that can help point you in the right direction.

"The trust and county sports organisations promote and support a wide range of sports clubs and activities across the county and we are pleased to be able to support them to do so."

There's lots of evidence showing the benefits of physical activity in terms of both treating and preventing diseases. Increasing physical activity improves health for people with long term conditions and can prevent many serious medical conditions.

The health improvements that come from physical activity are seen with even small amounts of exercise. The recommended minimum amount of exercise for adults is 30 minutes, five times a week and children should be moderately or vigorously active for at least 60 minutes every day.

The Active Derbyshire website is full of useful information about clubs, sports, activities and exercise opportunities. Visitors can search for details of local sports clubs, teams and activities, from athletics to Zumba, there's something to inspire everyone.

If you are a club or charity looking for funding to support a physical activity or sport project in the Derbyshire area they can help you find the grant or bursary to get you the assistance you need. You can also find out about coaching opportunities and accessible sports for people with disabilities.
