Street light upgrade continues in south Derbyshire
Work to switch to new-style street lights which will save us £1.2m per year has now started in south Derbyshire.
More than 68,000 lights countywide will eventually have their current bulbs replaced with LED fittings. Around 22,000 of the older lamp posts will also be replaced at the same time.
A total of 1,952 street lights around Barrow upon Trent, Breaston, Calke, Draycott, Elvaston, Ingleby, Melbourne, Shardlow, Swarkestone, Stanton by Bridge, Ticknall and Weston upon Trent are now being upgraded as part of our £23m 'invest to save' programme.
The current orange sodium lights will have their bulbs, light fittings and columns replaced with new LED fittings.
We are borrowing the cash which will be paid back over 20 years, although it is expected the initial investment will be recouped after eight years.
This countywide upgrade is expected to save us £1.2m a year.
This is because LED lights − expected to last for around 25 years compared to the three to four years life expectancy of the current lights − use less electricity and because they are more robust and easier to maintain.
Following consultation on plans to change to LED lights, 90% of respondents said they were in favour of the plan.
Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, our cabinet support member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said:
"It's great news that this project is being rolled out across the county. Because these new lights are cheaper to maintain and more energy efficient they will help us reduce our carbon footprint and help save around £1.2m every year.
"We expect this project to take around three years. We are now approaching the end of the first year and this latest round of conversion builds on the installation of 19,852 lights in other parts of the county."
Lights have already been upgraded in Coal Aston, Dronfield, Dronfield Woodhouse, Eckington, Holmesfield, Ilkeston, Killamarsh, New Whittington and Old Whittington.
And work continues to replace old-style streetlights with LEDs in Barlborough, Belper, Charlesworth, Chisworth, Clowne, Crich, Elmton, Glossop, Hazlewood, Hodthorpe and Belph, Long Eaton, Pentrich, Ripley, Sawley, Tintwistle and Whitwell.
