Quality services focus for our new strategic director
New appointment: Strategic Director for Commissioning, Communities and Policy Emma Alexander.
We've appointed former Kier Group business services director Emma Alexander to our new post of Strategic Director for Commissioning, Communities and Policy.
The post has been created to drive the council towards new ways of delivering quality services which are good value for money.
The move is part of our wider plans to save more than £300,000 a year on management costs, which has already seen the post of Chief Executive being abolished as well as losing two other top tier posts - Assistant Chief Executive and Strategic Director of Corporate Resources.
Ms Alexander's appointment was formally announced at a meeting of our Full Council today (Wednesday 13 September 2017) subject to the usual pre-employment checks.
Most recently working for the Kier Group, Ms Alexander has a wealth of experience in the public and private sectors stretching over many years.
Graduating from the University of Bristol, Ms Alexander is also an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
She began her career at Luton Borough Council and progressed to Leicester City Council, then Macclesfield, followed by a position as Corporate Director for Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC) and Oldham MBC before becoming managing director for the Unity Partnership and then on to her last position at Kier Group.
Ms Alexander said:
"Derbyshire is embarking on an ambitious programme designed to further deliver high quality and value for money services for all those living and working in the county.
"It is an honour and a privilege to be joining at such an exciting time. As a resident of Derbyshire for the last 15 years I look forward to bringing my experience, energy and commitment to the role, working with councillors, staff and local communities, building on the long tradition of a county of which we can all be proud."
Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said:
"We are delighted to be able to announce the appointment of Emma Alexander to the new post of strategic director for commissioning, communities and policy.
"This is an exciting time of change for Derbyshire County Council and I'm pleased we'll be harnessing Emma's skills and enthusiasm.
"She has extensive local government experience at a senior level across a number of areas and has successfully turned organisations around, as well as more than proving herself when it comes to achieving savings and improving services.
"We are very pleased to welcome her to the already strong management team at the council and are confident she can meet all the challenges that lie ahead for the council."
Ms Alexander is expected to take up her post with the council later this month.
