Careers service

We give free and impartial information, advice and guidance about career opportunities, learning and employment to any Derbyshire residents aged 19 years and over and to those aged 18 who are not currently in education, employment or training.


The advice is government funded through the National Careers Service and provided by highly qualified staff. These career coaches are friendly, supportive and knowledgeable about all local learning and work opportunities.

  • understanding your transferable skills

  • apply to the Civil Service

You can access our service in a variety of ways - one-to-one, drop-in sessions via our access points, and employability workshops.

Advice and support

Here are some examples of the sorts of advice and support we can give during your session:

  • career planning, including help to understand the current labour market, identifying the skills you already have, new career paths and routes into employment
  • how to write a CV or update an existing one
  • advice and information on courses or training including how to get funding and further opportunities
  • exploring volunteering and work experience opportunities across the county
  • how to write covering letters to gain the attention of employers
  • tips on finding a new job, such as making the most of the government's find a job service, using social media and exploring the hidden labour market
  • advice for writing an application form and relating it to a possible interview
  • guidance on interview skills including tips on preparation and planning, types of interview and questions to expect

Everyone is offered further, personalised support after their initial appointment.

Access points

The following is a list of all the access points we currently have running. A careers coach will be available to support you on the following days and times:

  • Belper Library, Derwent Street, Belper, DE56 1UQ: appointments only, Monday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm with Katie Tidmarsh
  • Bolsover Adult Education Centre, Castle Street, Bolsover, Chesterfield, S44 6PP: on the first Monday of the month from 10am to midday with Wendy Leigh
  • Chesterfield Library, New Beetwell Street, Chesterfield S40 1QN: every Tuesday from 9.30am to midday with Wendy Leigh
  • Matlock Adult Education Centre, The Ritz, Steep Turnpike, Matlock, DE4 3DP: appointments only, Tuesday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm with Katie Tidmarsh
  • Shirebrook Adult Education Centre, Carter Lane, Shirebrook, Mansfield NG20 8PE: bookable appointments available on Tuesdays from 10am to midday with Becky Stancill
